What Are Laminate (Porcelain) Veneers?
A laminate veneer is a custom-made, thin ceramic shell that covers only the visible front surface of the tooth, much like a mask. Its purpose is primarily cosmetic: it changes the colour, shape or size of the tooth while touching the natural tooth structure as little as possible.
Unlike a crown, which wraps around the entire tooth, veneer treatment removes only a very thin layer — typically 0.3-0.7 mm — from the front surface of the tooth; in some cases it can even be applied with no grinding at all. This means the natural structure of the tooth is largely preserved.
When Are Veneers Considered?
Veneers were developed for situations where the tooth itself is structurally sound but its appearance has aesthetic flaws. During your examination, the condition of your teeth and gums is assessed and the decision on whether veneers are right for you is made together.
- Permanent discolouration that cannot be resolved with teeth whitening
- Tetracycline (antibiotic) stains and stains caused by fluorosis
- Darkening that develops after root canal treatment
- Gaps between teeth (diastema)
- Mild crowding or misalignment
- Small chips and cracks at the tooth edges
- Worn, short or disproportionate teeth
- Shape irregularities (e.g. small, cone-shaped lateral incisors)
Are Veneers Suitable for Everyone?
The success of veneers depends not only on correct technique but also on oral health being ready for treatment. Conditions such as active gum disease, untreated decay, insufficient enamel for bonding, severe crowding and uncontrolled teeth clenching (bruxism) must be addressed first.
For patients who clench or grind their teeth, wearing a custom-made night guard regularly after the veneers are completed is important to help prevent the veneers from cracking or chipping.
Planning: Smile Analysis, Wax-up and Mock-up
The secret to successful veneer treatment lies in meticulous planning before the teeth are ever touched. In the first stage, your facial features, the position of your lips when you smile, your gum line, and the current colour, shape and size of your teeth are analysed as a whole; your expectations are discussed in detail.
The planned smile is then sculpted in wax on a model made from your impression (wax-up). This design is transferred directly onto your teeth with a temporary material (mock-up), so you can see your new smile in the mirror and experience your speech and lip support in real life. Once you give your final approval, the clinical phase begins.
Caring for Your Veneers
Veneers themselves do not decay; however, the natural tooth tissue beneath and around their edges can, and the surrounding gums can become inflamed. Brushing at least twice a day, daily use of dental floss or interdental brushes, and regular dental check-ups are therefore an inseparable part of the treatment.
Not cracking hard-shelled nuts with your teeth, not biting objects such as ice or pens, giving up habits like nail biting, and wearing your night guard consistently if one has been prescribed all help protect the health of your veneers.
The treatment, step by step
Examination and smile analysis
Your teeth and gums are examined in detail and X-rays are taken; your aesthetic expectations are discussed and a treatment plan is drawn up.
Wax-up and mock-up trial
The planned smile is first designed on a wax model, then tried in your mouth with a temporary material; any changes you request are made at this stage.
Minimal preparation and impression
After your approval, a very thin layer is removed from the tooth surface comfortably under local anaesthesia, and a precise impression or digital scan is taken.
Temporary veneers
While your veneers are being crafted in the laboratory, your teeth are protected with custom temporary restorations; you can carry on with daily life as normal.
Try-in and bonding
Colour, shape and bite harmony are checked together with you; once you approve, the veneers are permanently bonded to your teeth with a special resin cement.
